Summary: The Family Support Specialist (FSS) Coach builds and maintains relationships with families, social service agencies, stakeholders, and the broader community. The role includes systems-building activities, family engagement, education initiatives, and outreach efforts to connect families with needed resources and services. The FSS Coach is cross-trained to deliver a range of evidence-based services to families and youth in alignment with program requirements and agency needs. This position assists families in meeting basic needs and adapts to other tasks or modalities as required to ensure program success and meet funder expectations. Caseloads and duties may fluctuate based on program needs and are assigned by the Supervisor. This is not a formal supervisory role. Instead, the Coach mentors peers, models best practices, monitors fidelity to program models, and supports quality and compliance in service delivery. This role is responsible for supporting caseload coverage and addressing program needs during periods of vacancy. The Coach identifies issues and provides feedback but escalates final decisions to the Supervisor. The scope of work is subject to change as needed to ensure all projects are completed. Likewise, complementary changes may be made to projects or individual goals and employee expectations based on agency/management strategic goals. All Center for Children team members are expected to be collegial and collaborative, mutually supportive, and focused on excellent services to clients, fidelity to program models, and ethical provision of services.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain a caseload of families by providing intake, referrals, ongoing support, and case management; deliver and model evidence-based services (e.g., Strengthening Families, WhyTry, Motivational Interviewing) to strengthen parenting and family relationships. Caseload size and focus areas may fluctuate based on program needs.
- Provide coverage when other Family Support Specialists are unavailable, with Program Director awareness and approval. This may include taking on additional duties or adjusting focus to support priority areas.
- This role also supports caseload coverage and helps address program needs during periods of vacancy.
- Oversee the Family Resource Center (FRC) and Basic Needs Pantry by coordinating family engagement events, stocking and distributing items, and processing transportation requests.
- Support staff development as a coach (not a supervisor) by mentoring, onboarding, modeling best practices, facilitating reflective practice, and providing constructive feedback on program fidelity, service delivery, and documentation.
- Conduct performance and quality assurance activities, including file reviews, audits, assisting with billing accuracy, maintaining Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI) documentation, verifying data accuracy, and preparing reports for funders.
- Collect and track Scorecard data, monitor weekly trackers, and assist with strategic planning and compliance to ensure program goals are met.
- Develop and maintain program visibility and community partnerships by conducting school outreach, participating in a minimum of three community events per month, and presenting at health fairs.
- Collaborate with program staff to coordinate and ensure adequate event coverage, including providing or arranging coverage when the coach or other staff are unavailable.
- Represent the agency at prevention-focused events, coordinate family engagement activities, and strengthen relationships with stakeholders to promote services and recruit families.
- Complete or submit social media requests to promote program activities and highlight successes.
- Adhere to agency policies and professional standards of practice.
- Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet family needs.
- Participate in agency trainings, events, and fundraisers.
- Perform other duties as assigned or shifted based on program needs to support the Program Director and ensure program success.
Skills
- Must become an expert in the funder’s RFP, the grant application, and the expectations of this role, including the designated modalities, and other required services.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to relate well to diverse individuals, families, community leaders, and stakeholders at all organizational levels.
- A commitment to excel in developing innovative and creative solutions to meet grant goals and program requirements.
- Excel in coaching, training, program compliance, and leadership, with strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills to support families, staff, and partners.
- Strong results orientation, openness to new ideas, and a proven ability to deliver consistently high-quality services to families, community partners, and internal teams.
- Ability to perform a broad range of assignments, including outreach, intake, referrals, case management, and service delivery, with efficiency and accuracy.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing conditions within the grant and program while supporting and fostering teamwork and collaboration.
- Active listening skills and a nonjudgmental approach when working with families and clients.
- Exceptional organizational skills required for managing multiple projects, caseloads, and coordination with diverse entities and stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively engage families, facilitate programs, collaborate with partners, and maintain accurate documentation.
